Windows 7 gone funky. Time to reinstall?

Hi everyone,

I built a PC a few months ago and it's been running brilliantly until a couple of weeks ago. I'm not sure what to try besides just reinstalling Windows but wondered if anyone else had any ideas first.

Spec:
i5 2500k
MSI Nvidia 570
Asus P8z68V mobo
8gb ram
etc.

Problems:
  1. PC sometimes doesn't shut down. Shows the 'shutting down' screen indefinitely.
  2. Stalls and hiccups when playing iPlayer vids from hard-drive, but only periodically. (e.g. sound continues but picture freezes for a few seconds.)
  3. Firefox keeps crashing/not responding. Chrome seems ok.
  4. Minecraft occassionally hangs for a few seconds.
  5. Sometimes when playing iTunes music the sound goes "ooooo" for a second then the song resumes.

I've done my virus scans, CCleaner, and malwarebytes, I've uninstalled some stuff, reinstalled Flash, and I'm a bit stumped now.

A couple of weeks ago I'd be able to happily play minecraft on one side of the screen whilst watching an HD iPlayer show on the other side, or a bluray.

Uuuurgh.

I'd try the Repair tool first. Then if its no better, you could try the Fresh Install. Also, try think of anything that you have installed in the last few weeks since this has started, and see if any of those may cause it.

Thanks guys.

Have never used the Repair tool before. Had a quick look at the documentation - seems if I used it I would have to reinstall some hardware drivers anyway, so I'm thinking I might as well just do a fresh install. By the way, is there a recommended order for installing drivers?

Since posting this I've uninstalled a few more things and have reinstalled Java. No joy. A song froze a few minutes ago, and firefox flashed up a (Not Responding) notice in the title bar at the same time. No idea what's gone wrong.

Since I'm reinstalling the system - which would be a good Internet Security/Anti Virus package to use? I've been using AVG free but a friend has scared me off the free AV offerings. How's Kaspersky IS 2012? Also, what would be a good software solution to automate backup? I've been doing it manually, but not as often as I should really.

Thanks, and apologies for going off on tangents.

avg could be the root of your problems, however it's a difficult choice with av programs. My fave at moment is avira though

Is your hardware configured correctly? E.g. do you have a SSD? Is it running TRIM? Is there a stable overclock? Are memory timings and voltage correct? Check all the stuff like that.

I'm with the guy above though, could have had the reinstall done by now! :p
