Windows 7 hangs on startup

This is a clean install of windows 7, installed a few games, fine. but then randomly after an update the system starts hanging at startup. It was like the third windows update. I rolled back and the same thing is still happening, any clues on what the hell is going on?

This was the main reason why I reinstalled the OS as it was doing this to me before... the only way to get the system to run properly is to reboot and then "start windows normally"

Regards

it's the same as this, it's really just a pain in the backside more than an impossibility of getting into windows. I've changed HDD's concluded it wasn't a HD fault, changed ram same problem persists. It's got to be a driver issue or something to do with compatibility perhaps even my BIOS is wrongly configured but I have no way of testing half the problems because it could be a number of things. The spontaneousness in nature of this problem makes it even more of a problem to sort.

I've just been told by a mate that the problem we're experiencing is probably the phenomenon known as the 'black screen of death.' Quite common after a particular windows security update...

I was hoping sp1 might fix it but alas :(

Anyone else found a fix yet?
