As title. Any ideas? if I boot the machine up from cold and then shutdown that will work fine. If I boot the machine up, then put it to sleep, then wake it, and then try to shut it down, it will hang indefinitely.

Driver issue? Where do I start?

My spec is:

Windows 7 64 bit pro
Asus P5Q3
Intel Quad q9450
16gb DDR3 Hyper X
AMD 7850 MSI
Samsung 830 128gb SSD
Bluray drive
Only one other HDD a Western Digital is in there currently

I tried pulling all USB devices out during shutdown, and this does not help.

I fixed this problem. I thought I would post back incase others find the same issue.

The problem was with the JMicron sata ports on my mobo. A proper driver did not exist for them and just a "basic" one was pulled from the Windows 7 OS install and updates. Despite this, the Bluray drive I had plugged into one of them still functioned, but it was causing the hang at shutdown. As soon as I put the dedicated proper Jmicron driver on, a SCSI storage device showed up properly in device manager with "JMircon" beside it, and the machine was able to shutdown even after a resume from sleep.

So my advice when this happens to you, is to pull out as many connected things to the mobo as possible one by one during the shutdown hang, as this can help quickly find the issue because (as in my case) often when you find the culprit the machine will suddenly stop hanging and shutdown. Give the machine a good minute during the hang per component pulled out. So for example, pull out a HDD, wait a minute, pull out all USB devices, wait a minute....etc.
