i just bought a system from overclockers and i had a SSD 40 GIG... They installed windows 7 this has left mer with 19 on my c drive. I have 2 lots of program files one says 86 next to it Is this right ...I have a 500 gig E DRIVE and a system reserved 100 mb .. i need to partition my e drive but not sure how to do it any help plz...john

Depends how many programs you have installed. Games tend to go in there and take up several gig each, so it can get very large if you have lots installed.

Reduce the size of your pagefile down to 400MB (I have minimum 400, maximum 2000, setting lower than 400 Windows said it might not be enough space for memory dumps or error logs etc), depending how much RAM you have you could save a few GBs of space. But after installing Windows 7 on a 40GB drive having 19GB left seems normal. I have 30GB free out of 55GB on my SSD after Windows 7 64bit install and a few other programs.

Reduce pagefile and set it to a custom value as Fanatic suggests.

Also, if you don't put your PC / Laptop in Hibernate mode then disable is. From command prompt type "powercfg -h off".

Hibernation uses up as much space as your RAM. So if you have 4GB RAM this will free up another 4GB on your HDD.

sorry fellas havnt got a clue what your on about ..i'm a newbee at doing all this ..had this computer all day and still trying to get the start menu to open like xp ...john

For the start bar right:

  • Right click the start bar
  • Click Properties
  • Change "Taskbar buttons" to "Combine when taskbar is full" or "Never combine"

For the page file:

  • Click the Start button
  • Right click Computer and click properties
  • Advanced system settings (top left)
  • Advanced tab
  • In the Performance section click Settings
  • Advanced tab
  • Virtual memory section click Change
  • Click the Custom size radio button
  • Click drive C: in the list
  • Set Intial size to 400 and maximum size to 2000
  • Click Ok and reboot

For Hibernation:

  • Click the Start button
  • Type "cmd" in the search box
  • Right click cmd.exe and click Run as administrator
  • Then type "powercfg -h off"
  • Close the cmd window

I hope I got that stuff right :)

I don't know if it possible but it would be a lot better if the program files for 32 bit and 64 bit programs could be combined into one folder.
