Windows 7 Home upgrade edition question ?

Just popped into town to purchase this, I told the lady in the store that I'm upgrading from XP, she told me that their upgrade edition only allows you to upgrade from Vista ?, and that if I'm upgrading from XP I need to purchase the full retail version, is this true ?

The assistant in the store, it's a very popular nationwide electrical retail outlet, anyway that really confused me so I thought I'd come home and ask you guys.

So out of interest what does the Upgrade version do ?, does it install on top of my XP then ?

You can't do an in-place upgrade to keep all your programs from XP, so it'll check you have a qualifying product installed and then will basically do a fresh install.
