I bought windows 7 with the student discount and downloaded the files. I installed as a write over of my vista copy but now want to do a fresh install. The files are in a folder called expanded setup and I want to install from a USB stick. Do i take the files out of the folder and place on USB and then change the boot priority or do I have to change the formatting of the drive? Any advice is appreciated

There are a number of artcles on the web, but yes you'll need the flat files once you've prepared the USB stick etc.

I did it last week for my work PC, very quick and easy install.

I did all that and it didnt work. Then i noticed that my version is an upgrade version. Does this mean i cant do a fresh install or am i doing something wrong with the files i downloaded? As the files have come in parts i cant seem to make head nor tail of it
