Ok, so I have my 7077 ISO, and I burnt it to a DVD at the lowest speed using imgburn.

I am installing on Virtual Pc to test the install. Virtual Pc lets me either use the physical disk or mount the ISO. So I tried using the DVD I burnt. Problem is it just doesnt move past 0% for extracting files.

So I thought I might have a duff ISO and mounted the ISO as the direct CD drive. It installed.. although took a little while and I didnt see it move from 0%.. just came back a bit later and it was done.

Maybe I am just being impatient with the DVD, but it doesnt seem to be working.. should I try a different burning program?

Any help is much appreciated.

mount the ISO using virtual clone drive and tell virtualbox (better and quicker than virtual pc) to use the drive instead of a real disc, will install quicker

if it fails, then you have a damaged ISO

I already did that and it succeeded at installing so I know the ISO is fine.
Shoddy burn, either try a different disk brand or lower speeds :)

I havnt tried a different disk brand, but I have tried a lower burn speed. I used max speed to start with and then 1x second time. Maybe I've just been unlucky.

I will try a different brand, but considered that it might be the program.. although I dont see in Nero how to create a bootable ISO.. it just tells me that I cant put the ISO on that disc and I should be using UDF.

Nero Go to Nero burning rom
Get rid of "New Compilation"
Go to the top select "Recorder" then "Burn Image"
and then use the image that (one assumes) you have downloaded
or of course check out imgburn

Imgburn definitely works just fine with the Windows 7 ISO, I've been there & done that :)
If the disk boots, there's nothing wrong with the way you've burned it, it's whether the disk is OK all the way through.

Another thought just struck me though- You're not using a SATA DVD connected to a 'funny' controller are you?
The Vista installer had issues with my SATA drive when connected to JMicron & SiliconImage controllers. I've sucessfully installed from Nvidia & Intel controllers though.

Cheers, I will try Nero and a different DVD brand on a low speed.

I'm only installing in a virtual environment atm, but my DVD drive is a pretty ordinary Samsung IDE jobby.

how long did you leave it? try 10 mins

failing that..

keep using imgburn

try new..

media
cable
dvd drive

Ok, so I thought.. what the hell.. lets leave it running while I go play tennis.

Come back (hour and a half later) and it was on 22% of Expanding Windows Files, 5 mins later 24%. So it is working.. just very slowly.. could it be a quirk in my virtualisation settings? I wanted to make sure the CD worked before formatting the system and doing a proper install.. but looks like I should just go for it now..

christ!

W7 installed on my virtual machine in well under 20 mins iirc

tbh, it's been almost flawless for me as a real install, had one slight issue with a bad gfx card driver, but that's nvidia's fault :)
