Just seen this article on X-bits. It looks like they are on track to release Windows 7 at some point in 2009.

I was waiting to upgrade to Vista soon-ish but now I may skip it altogether...

Wow, it was released last year? :p

Microsoft still need to iron out the bugs in Vista at the moment, and I can't really see a new OS from them next year.

Will be at least another three years till a new OS from Gates and co and even then I'd be massively surprised if it was that soon.

Can't see another MS OS quite so soon.

Perhaps a big update pack with some new features?

They did pretty much the same with Windows 2000 and XP.

XP was out pretty soon after 2000 Pro.
But wouldn't you say that XP and 2000 were aimed at different markets? XP for home usage and 2000 more for business.

Well, I still am dual booting between XP and Vista (mostly because I am being lazy in switching all my programs over, rather than an actual fault of Vista).

Will be interesting to see if it is based on the same Kernel as Vista, and just how different it will be

This is exactly how Microsoft have operated in the past, albeit this time a bit different.

Windows 7 is to be what Vista was meant to be; better underlying performance so that the added gloss does not drag down your hardware, a better and more robust file system etc. etc.

The pattern has been as follows;

Windows 98 - By in large, new underlying system
Windows ME - Sharpened for consumers (failed, though), 1 - 2 years later

Windows 2000 - By in large, new underlying system
Windows XP - Sharpened for consumers, 1 - 2 years later

The pattern will flip for Vista / Windows 7:

Windows Vista - By in large, new overlaying system (the permissions system, the glossy bits, explorer), pretty much aimed at and more popular with consumers
Windows 7 - By in large, new underlying system

Wrong. Vista was the technology release... probably the biggest single revamp to Windows ever. Windows 7 will be a user release - other than the hypervisor there won't be much new technology on show.

Not saying you are wrong, but don't most people say that the 3.1 to 95 jump is the biggest?

I know however, you mean in how the kernel and the "under the bonnet" stuff though...

Wasn't 3.1 to 95 as massive of a change?

3.1 to 95 was big and is the only other release that comes close to Vista in terms of the amount of new technology.

argreed, i know ive never seen a huge uptake on 2k for home use, maybe the odd one or two. i had it, hated it, more suitable for the office environmnt
I never had Windows 2000. Got ME though. :o

Agree with you on the home use of 2000. Quite a few people seemed to use it. Better than ME I suppose. :p

I'd say 95 to XP is the biggest leap, with XP being the first proper windows which was actually an OS!
