Windows 7 keeps crashing

Hi all. I installed Windows 7 32bit home edition on to my dad's computer. The first day it was working fine but now at random times will completely freeze and you have to restart the computer.

It is running a celeron d 2.93ghz cpu and 512mb ram. I am using windows 7 because I wanted to upgrade from xp and vista apparently uses more memory than 7.

Any ideas why it would randomly freeze?
 
That system is below the minimum spec (needs more RAM), this is straight from Microsoft's site...

If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:

■1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor.

■1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit).

■16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit).

■DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver.
 
Bang on the money there Need more RAM mate..... even with 1Gb of RAM it will be slow with the celeron CPU if you can whack it to at least 2Gb great but better use it with 4Gb if your upgrading may aswell get it to 4Gb for the extra cost....
