Hi All,

Over the last few months this has become more and more common - sometimes it can go over a week without, sometimes not even a minute - sometimes the computer wont even boot.

The screen/mouse just freeze, as does the sound.

My specs are;
Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit,
Intel Core i7 920 2.66Ghz
OCZ 6GB DDR3 PC3-10666C9 Gold Low-Voltage Triple Channel Kit
GeForce GTX260 896MB

(Purchased from OC).

I've just written this message in 'safe mode' and it seems stable - any ideas?

Cheers,
Sam

does your monitor/s go all funny coloured n have like pixel dots all over them?

mine used to do this aswel as what you described.. then my gpu died n its not done it since

:EDIT: other than the not booting thing...

What sort of PSU, make, power and model is powering the system?

At what stage of the boot process does it fail, when it fails thus 'sometimes the computer wont even boot'? How does it not boot, what sort of symptoms does it give. Black screen. No fan activity. BIOS fail messages. Beeps?

If it's right at the start before BIOS loads from Hard drive then it's nothing to do with the OS or drivers, otherwise it could be the drivers or OS.

Could be RAM, PSU or a few things.

Hi,

I'm not sure - I'll try find out.

Usually after the computer freezes, the next few times I try and turn it on the fan comes on at full speed and nothing else happens.

Check your is your PSU is functioning as expected. Use my guide here:
http://www.huddysworld.co.uk/index....rking&catid=40:techie-talk-hardware&Itemid=72

If your PSU is ok, then check your RAM modules by using MEMTEST86+.

Check the manufacturers website for recommended voltage and timings etc.
Try running your system with one stick of RAM at a time and try that stick in different slots. If the RAM stick fails in all slots, then its almost certainly a RAM problem. If the working RAM stick works in one slot but not another, then this is looking at a memory controller problem. This could be CPU or Motherboard depending on the platform. In your case, this will be on the CPU.

Read this guide for further details on how to check your RAM:

Lastly, look at the system dump and Event Manager for clues. Event manager is often overlooked and under estimated.

Hope that helps

One final suggestion - make sure you're using the most up to date bios for your motherboard. I experienced this freezing issue due to an out-of-date bios and it was solved as soon as I updated it.

Download latest and put on a USB stick. Then use inbuilt bios option to upgrade and select the USB stick.

I wouldn't do this until you can be sure it's not the memory or the gfx card though (most likely suspects) and it could freeze mid-bios update and then your computer would essentially become an expensive paperweight.

Try a spare graphics card if you have one or can get hold of one. Try clearing out your current one's fan(s) of dust as that helped me when mine seemed to go wrong. My money is on the cause being something to do with your graphics card myself.

Not the RAM.

How do I test the GX card?

My results from heaven benchmark - at the risk of sounding a noob, does this mean my GX card is fine?

Also (as above), my binary is 32bit - is that right? :s

Cheers,
Sam

Did you check the PSU as suggested?

As for GPU, the benchmark shows that it's ok but you can use the Folding @ Home GPU client to test stability and temps on full load.. but i would check the PSU first anyway.

My sound stupid but....

1) Check you have all of the latest drivers and windows updates for everything on your pc

2) Swap put the bits of your system that you can (graphics card, psu, ram) to see if the issue still happens.

3) Check you have not got any dodgey third parties drivers installed for anything

4) I wouldnt say this is a heat issue as the sytem would shut itself down to protect itself, if the screen and sound is looping then i would say its a power issue or a driver issue.
