So yeah, I basically have a massively corrupt windows 7 install because I foolishly accidentally deleted the reserved 100mb MBR partition when formatting my HDD. Windows 7 installed with some warnings saying some files couldn't be installed.

Documents are missing/hidden, BSODs etc etc. I can't repair or format my HDD because whenever I try and load the install or recovery disc I get a

"Windows failed to load because the kernel is missing or corrupt"

So yeah... Apart from buying a new HDD, is there anything I could try? :(

run system file checker with the /f

first you need to load the dvd and use the console and not the auto repair setup

if that still doesn't work, bang it in another pc and either do a repair from that or format from there, at least your get your doc's etc that way if needed, or at worst you wont have to get another drive

thing is, i can't actually get into the windows 7 install/repair disc at all... After the "loading windows files" bar, i then get the white text on black background saying the kernel is missing or corrupt...

I can boot into my HDD and do stuff from here though

The fastest and easiest way of getting around this is to connect the HDD to another computer running Win7 and then delete all the partitions on this HDD. Don't format them, but delete them. Then Connect the HDD to the rig you want and do a fresh install of Win7 from the DVD you have. It will automatically create a new MBR and partition for it.
If you have any data on the HDD you want to keep, then copy it to the other computer before you delete all the partitions on it.

worked a charm, thankyou!

odd question incoming... is it normal for documents folder to be completely empty after a fresh win7 install?
