Windows 7 KMS word of warning..

We got given our KMS key in the middle of last week and access to Windows 7 last Friday.

We run a Server 2008 KMS host. I have found out that Server 2008 KMS hosts cannot activate Windows 7 keys just yet. Windows 2003 KMS hosts had a fix rolled out today that allow them to do this, but so far, nothing for 2008.

So - if you're thinking of migrating - leave it for now.

On the plus side - loving Windows 7. A lot faster for most of the stuff I do day to day. Specifically, visual studio, sql server management and other dev stuff. I'm impressed. Still havn't got around to turning UAC off/down though - I hate that :(

Do you have a link for the KMS patch?
We skipped straight over Vista, so haven't needed to install KMS, but with Windows 7 looking very promising indeed we're taking a serious look at it.

If you go to the Microsoft download site and search for "KMS" they are the last two in the list. Depends if you're 64 or 32bit. I do wish they would hurry and release a 2008 patch.

Apparently 2008 R2 will work ok and also you can use windows 7 itself as a KMS host - although as they are turned on and off and you can't guarantee they will be there, that's not ideal.
