Just a heads up for anyone having network problems using windows 7 - the below may be of some use:
I had a network issue after a Windows 7 'optional' update for my onboard network adapter (LAN Realtek 8111C chip ) - see sig for motherboard. (I never use window optional updates normally - but as there are very few drivers out there for this OS i opted to use it)
After, allowing windows to update the driver for the adapter, windows was unable to identify my network. Obviously, the solution was simple - just 'roll back' the drivers in device manager - and voila!
Having said that, hind-sight is a wonderful thing:
The reality is, i didn't notice this the first time i suddenly got this problem as i did not reboot immediately after the windows update. So, the next day when i booted up my system i had totally forgot about the driver update and consequently spent hrs looking for a problem i couldn't fix (my bad, i know). So in the end i did a re-install which, thankfully, is no hardship with W7 - it's a brutal way to fix a problem but it worked.
After the install i updated again - and this time logged the network driver update - i allowed it to update to see if i could replicate the problem - and sure enough...
I will add, I do normally reboot straight away after updates - just incase i get problems - but having kids sometimes negates that option...
Hope this proves of some use to someone.
