Windows 7 Logon hangs on "Welcome"

Hey guys,

Have a new build and everything is perfect with it, apart from one tiny thing which is bugging me.

When I installed Windows the boot time was ridiculously quick on my Samsung 840 Evo SSD, but now for some reason it hangs on "Welcome" after entering my password for about 10 seconds. I have Googled and tried every suggestion but at my wits end now.

Anyone experienced this before? And no, I am not using a solid colour as background.

My work PC does this whilst it's waiting for the network to come up (for some reason this machine takes ages to get a DHCP response). Could it be that?
 
Unplug your network cable from PC before logging in, and if this is fixes the fault then you could give your NIC a static IP Address rather than receiving one through DHCP.

Eugh, doesn't seem to be that.

It's frustrating that I can get to the login screen in 5 seconds but after logging in "Welcome" hangs for 10. Like I said, it didn't do this after a fresh install (and I don't want to reinstall)

Back to the drawing board!
 
Do you have a lot of files on your desktop?
You could also try clearing out the temp files and cached internet files and this may clear your profile up.

Wouldn't hurt to run something like Malware bytes or SpyBot on your machine either to check for some nasties?
 
I have tried creating a new user account and the problem persists. I have windows 7 installed on an ssd, Samsung 840 EVO.
 
Well, I give up! The question is, does it bother me enough to want to reformat.

The answer is probably yes !
 
Try using msconfig and run a selective startup with startup items/services turned off. That should be a bare boot without any services which could be slowing you down. If that works then you know where to investigate.

Failing that, just turn on auto login and go make a cup of tea? :p
 
Been having a similar problem for a while now, Ewaf!

W7 was booting nice and snappy (Crucial M4) but now it just hangs on the welcome page, for what seems like an age, before everything kicks in.
 
I have had this too with a couple of laptops recently. Bluetooth device monitor service has been a massive pain in starting up after a windows update. By disabling it, reduced a 5 min start down to a 1 min start.
Opinion here, if you don't use it, why run it.

However, keeping to thread:
Check out your event log to see the times etc in application and windows to see if anything is causing problems.

I just really cba to do a fresh install, so I'll just put up with it for a bit longer I think :D

...keep us posted if you do find a fix though ;)
 
One thing, have you set up any network drives at all? Because I have a machine which sits at the welcome screen for a while if my main machine is off (or it's on a different network/disconnected).

Basically it cannot find the network drives so it waits while it looks for them. Is this a possibility for you?

There are some did not load for some of the drivers but googling seems to return quite a lot of irrelevant stuff!


EDIT: enabling verbose description thing shows that "Preparing Desktop" is the thing that takes the longest right at the end?

I think I have found the culprit, but no fix yet.

Using event viewer, I can see that 'BootExplorerInitTime' is taking 14 seconds to boot, whereas looking shortly after I installed windows and the week or so after that, its less than a second and VERY rarely just over a second!

Googling hasn't found a solution yet!
