Windows 7, loop:Updates fail-retry?

...Had this recently on someone's machine. Safe mode just kept the loop going so was of no use.
The only thing that worked in this case was breaking the cycle with an attempted repair and running a complete chkdsk. Took hours and hours but rebooted back to a login and afaik is still running OK now.

Have you tried SFC /SCANNOW on the admin CMD prompt?
