Windows 7 - Massive Slowdowns Now?

System (in sig) Windows 7 has been rock solid for a good while now but in the last week it is having massive slowdowns every day. If I am multitasking - any two different apps open, even non-intensive ones like VLC and Firefox, when I open a new webpage, Windows will just stop dead for a full ten seconds or more before opening anything. Compared to how fast the system normally is, these slowdowns feel like something is seriously wrong but I don't know what.

All 8 cores will be up at about 60% usage just opening another webpage. There should not be such massive slowdowns on SSDs, any idea on what might be causing it, or a fix without having to re-install Windows? Anything else it could be?

I have not added any new hardware since the gpu last Christmas and no new software recently other than games.

not too sure if you have done this or not but you could check resource monitor in windows 7 to see what's causing the slowness?

right click on the click in the bottom right and select task manager, click on performance tab along the top and then click on resource monitor down the bottom right.
