Hi,

I'm thinking of upgrading to Windows 7 from XP Pro, but am unsure of how much memory Windows 7 could, or should be run with.

Right now I have 2gb PC6400 (2x1gb sticks). My board (Asus P5KC, rev 1.03) has 4 free slots.

Should I order more memory when I order Windows 7? How much would you recommend and why?

Thanks for all help.

The official recommendations are:

Windows 7 32bit - 1GB
Windows 7 64bit - 2GB

If you can afford more memory I would:

Windows 7 32bit - Upgrade to 4GB, although you will only be able to utilise 3.5GB
Windows 7 64bit - Upgrade to as much as you can, but at least 4GB anyway

Obviously which version you will be running depends on what CPU you have, but either way, the general thoughts with RAM is "the more the merrier!".

EDIT - I should probably add however that you will get away with running with the memory you have irrespective of which version you use.

I've just built my parents a new PC with 2gb and E2180 (Win7 x64) and it runs like a dream. Uses less than 500mb on the desktop with superfetch enabled, that with anti-virus etc all running. I've even used in on my old laptop with a 3500+ AMD and 1gb DDR and it was more than usable for work, videos etc.

Like mentioned, the more the better. You can't really ever get enough memory.

Well, the more the better is the general rule but you get significantly diminishing improvements when you start going beyond 4GB.

I've run Vista for years and more recently Windows 7 with 2GB of RAM and it's been absolutely fine.

Depends on what you do really.

I ran vista with 2GB ram no problems at all, even with huge photoshop documents there was still memory to spare.

When I upgraded to 4GB I didn't notice much difference for everyday tasks. I did notice that my frequently used apps were loading faster, as there was more space available for superfetch.
