I've just reinstalled Windows 7 64bit and last time I could right click on the Windows Live Messenger exe file and select run in compatibility mode as Vista. It would then run in the system tray and not in the new style taskbar.

With a fresh install and latest version, even selecting compatability mode doesnt make the icon appear in the system tray :( Does anyone know how to get round this? Having MSN taking up a large icon area of the taskbar seems silly and I wish they'd include an option to just stick it in the system tray like all previous versions!!

I have the RC 7100 build.

I know its so nippy, the horrible big icon, btw it still works. Goto the actuall .exe set it to compatibility for xp sp3. Once done open it from the exe and close it with the red x in the corner it will be in the taskbar now. The unpin the icon and its back to normal :D

Also to get it so each window is different on the task bar goto start menu options then select never combine under taskbar location.

had the same problem ... after setting compatibility to Vista it still didnt work, until i also ticked "run as administrator" in the same tab ... it's now happily sat down next to the clock

Cheers all! I'll get click happy and see what happens. It goes to show people want this feature so hopefully Microsoft bring it back. Avast AV happily sits in the system tray so it must be MSN that is doing it!
