My parents pc, hard drive completely fubar with no data recovery possible. I put in a new hard drive and put a fresh copy of windows 7 on it and use their oem key to activate.

All good, validated and working, now a month later its reporting

Windows 7
Build 7601
This copy of Windows is not genuine

Do you think I just need to go over there and activate over the phone? I've searched and it seems ok to use a proper install disk and the OEM key so I don't believe I have breached a licence issue.

Don't think activating over the phone will make a lot of difference as your key has probably been blacklisted due to being randomly generated by some pirate and then bundled in with a dodgy download.
Although I'm sure they'll be able to do something to help as you can prove you have the original licence, I just don't think it'll be as simple as reactivating.

The key came with a Zoostorm PC and was stuck to the machine, I find it hard to believe its not genuine, its from a pretty big online place.

Have they clicked the validate link? Probably just needs reconfirming. My recently reinstalled laptop done exactly the same thing. Clicked the link and it reactivated fine.

My spare laptop did exactly the same in the last week after I reinstalled Win 7 just before Xmas. Used the OEM key on the sticker. Are they doing a purge all of a sudden or is this always the case? I definitely remember clicking an "activate windows" button somewhere after installing as well. Going to try the phone activation thing.

I def did the activate ok the first time around.. weird.

I did read about microsoft periodically checking the "finger print" of installs, maybe the hard drive and install was enough to cause this problem, who knows.

Anyways, just phoned and done it on there and its all gone ok and shows as validated again now.
