Is it possible? I've got the EEE PC 701 model and was wondering whether i could fit Windows 7 on. Only use it to surf the net, and MSN

The consensus seems to be that if a PC can run XP, it can run W7. MS learned the hard way. People had had XP for so long they couldn't give a hoot about upgrading their hardware for Vista: an OS that the majority of people just didn't need.

I doubt you'd fit Win7 on the 701's 4GB of SSD. And even if you managed, the winsxs folder would gradually become bigger, eating up what little space you had left.

The developers of Win7 stated that they plan to have it fit on a 16GB SSD that some netbooks have.

id agree, though with time im sure we'll have a nlite/vlite like tool for win7 allowing useless stuff to be stripped out and maybe then it'll fit

Yup, you can already strip it down pretty small, but if you look at the c:\windows\winsxs folder on your vista/win7 machine, you'll see a lot of crap in there that the OS needs, which grows over time, and you cant delete it or move it. Until that is changed, then it's not going to work very well.

This. I did come across someone who had installed it successfully by having a 8 or 16Gb SD card kept in the external slot the whole time and used some convoluted process to put the winsxs folder onto the sd card. I don't have a link to the article with me at the moment but I think it may have been Vista he initially managed to achieve this on.

I'm installing RC1 on my EEEPC (1000), clean copy rather than upgrade (from XP).

During install it said recommended 10GB of free space but it is installing just now on the 8GB install SSD, so will let you know how it gets on.

windows then assign page file around 2gb and then tamp files, windows update and applications.

cant you swap the sdd for a 2.5 hdd?

If you only use it for MSN and the internet there's little point in putting Windows 7 on. I cant see what benefit you'd get over the pre installed xandros OS? Or if you need windows, XP?

Done an install on my sisters dell mini 9 which has 8gb SSD and have just under 1gb free which should be fine as it's just for the web.

i had vista on my eee 701 fine. Had to cut it down to tiny size with some software (vlite i think?)

might be usefull waiting for one to come out for 7?

Couldn't get either Windows 7 or Vista to install, get some random error. Decided to Vlite Windows 7, although I think its more of a case of having to do some prep work on the partitions that actually made it start installing properly. It is currently installing on the secondary SSD drive (32GB).
