hey guys

I have recently started encountering a problem where the charms bar on my windows 8.1 keeps popping out, even when i am not doing antying on the pc (i can leave the pc turned on and i come back and the charms bar has popped out)

This results in the game i am playing minimizing when i am playing it, as every can appreciate this is very very frustrating and it cannot go on....

I have tried all the fixes i can find on the net but non seem to work so my question is....

would there be any great issue if i completly gave up on windows 8.1 and started using windows 7 until Win 10 is out?

i dont want to do this as i actually like some features within Windows 8.1 but after approx 1 month of trying to sort this problem i have given up!

Cliffs:

:Windows 8.1 side bar keeps popping out ruining gaming sessions

:cannot fix it so wanting to see if its viable to use Windows 7 instead until Win 10 comes out.

Cheers

I don't know how to fix the issue but if you want to keep your current install and a quick fix install classic shell, will allow you to set a windows 7 start menu and allow you to disable the charms so its doesn't come up anymore.

I don't like the charms in windows 8.1 so this is what I do.

maybe just re install 8.1 if your going to install 7 instead or maybe use a system restore back to when it was working ok?

hey Ed and thanks for the the reply

I have already cleanly reinstalled windows 8.1 and the issue still arrises, tested it with numerous games and it has continued to happen so unless i get a suggestion which is completly different to anything i have tried ive given up on that o/s

Is the classic shell 3rd party software? i think it has been suggested to me but id rather fix the issue without 3rd party software or get a diff o/s

im just getting to the end of my tether with it

Yes, its third party software. was thinking it would be a quick fix and allow you no down time.

is this on a pre built system or one you have built yourself?

is the name of the software just classic shell?

Its a custom built system built by OCUK, i am liasing with them on how to fix it and they are providing great customer service but we have not been able to find a fix as of yet so thought id ask for a few fresh opinions

have you used google to try and find a fix at all or just speaking to OCUK staff?

was going to have a check on there for you but if you have already done that then ill not bother lol

I have carried out all the instructions i can find one google, even so far and editing the registry so i think google has been exhusted

Ocuk have given me other suggestions but they are at the end of their suggestion list also

I have tried the inbuilt refresh option and i have also cleared the pc of everything and reinstalled win 8.1 from stock settings and the issue is still occurring

was it a system refresh done through windows 8 or a clean install and removed everything previously?

is this a new build you just brought?

if it came from OCUK with windows 8.1 installed does it have any 3rd party software installed in the system tray or anything like that?

yes it was a system built by OCUk for myself and it came with windows installed on it..

i have tried both the refresh (which i tried first) when that didnt work i tried the clean install (the option which states this may take many hours to complete)

I have not checked the system tray but i did not see any 3rd party software on the system when it arrived with me, nor have i idetified any after the installs (which i assume the clean install would wipe everything)

please can i state i am far from a pc expert, this is the first pc i have built/chosen components for in about 10 years but i can follow instructions even quiet testing ones

I still use windows 7 for gaming and browsing.

if you are ok with downgrading and have the ability to then why not and as you said once windows 10 is out you can upgrade to that.

So back to my orginal question, if i down grade to win 7 until win 10 is out am i likely to see any major downfalls?

After a day yesterday playing around with my fathers 8.1 system, it was an absolute joy to get back home to my Win 7 64 bit!
I see no downfalls, 7,for me, is more familiar and operates as you'd expect where 8.1 is different (not necessarily worse) in many areas.

I'm happy with 7 for now, I think I'd only upgrade to 10 if hardware or a particular game I wanted to play deemed it necessary to do so.

I don't think I'll bother with 8.1 at all personally.

Thanks for your thoughts and advice!

I enjoy using both o/s's as i use 7 in work but since getting 8.1 and starting to get familiar with it and its new layout i do enjoy using it... well apart from the downfall which made me create this thread
