Hi all

It's my first post on here, so please go easy...
Just wondering what your opinion would be on whether to buy Windows 8 64bit or Windows 7 64bit for a brand new PC gamer build?

The price difference (if any) isn't an issue, but having a background in Macs, I'm always very wary of being an early adopter of a new system as it tends to be a nightmare for compatibility issues.

It will 100% be a gaming machine, and I own no other Windows software. I will not necessarily be buying all new games, theres loads of old titles I'd like to get hold of aswell as things like BF3 and more modern ones and I'm a bit worried that some older and more obscure games are gong to give me problems under v8.

I have almost zero experience with Windows, so I'll be starting afresh with either version as far as the learning curve is concerned. I understand that as long as I get the 64 bit version that is the main thing?

Is the compatibility a valid concern? Which version would you choose?

The PC will look a bit like i5 3570K, 7970 graphics, 8GB ram.

Any advice much appreciated.

I wouldn't worry too much about compatibility. Both would be fine for gaming too, I prefer 7 for now but I have thawed a little to 8 after playing about with it

I'm a gamer using Win8 and to be honest not had any issues gaming.

You could say I'm very happy I upgraded from Win7 to 8,I do feel Nvidia and AMD will concentrate drivers on Win8 now and game developers will be using Win8 as their main platform for new games being its the latest now its official.

some games will not work under win 8

Check to see if the games you will be playing will work on win 8

If most of them do then get it , if they dont get win 7 instead

At the moment I'd pick Windows 7 as Windows 8 is still in the early stages. Most things work as far as I know, but there are (as usual with new MS OSes) still a few problems with some applications.

Not had one single game issue with Windows 8. In fact on my rig it performs abit better than windows 7 I even getting higher score on heaven 3.0 not a big difference but still an improvement.

Granted it's an old game, but Call of Duty 2 won't work under 8, due to punkbuster.

The fixes around for other punkbuster games simply don't work. :(

Windows 7 for me on my gaming rig, for now.
