huh?
I'll be buying a new copy of Windows (which Overclockers will install for me on the system), I just can not make my mind up between which one.
How have people got along with Windows 8 as a desktop?
My Dad uses it on his work laptop and has been really impressed with it.
The lionshare of the advice that you are going to get on here is that 'Hey, Windows 8 is really cool when you get used it', or the more moderate replies will tell you, "if the Metro UI really gets on your **** then there are lots of unofficial 3rd party apps you can install to get a start button on the desktop".
I will tell you however, that if you are not operating a tablet or other touchscreen device, steer clear of Windows 8. Aside from the absolutely retarded layout of practically everything, such as; app screens that like to impose themselves on you offering no back back button; desktop not as a 'shell' but as an 'app', which means if you are into gaming, then that will make the likes of Steam an app within an app etc....the list really does go on and on. Windows 8 at this time, suffers from a very high level of bugs and issues. I suffered one app crash too many last night, from which there was no recovery except for a shutdown and restart.....and then get this; often Windows 8 would reboot, loading up the same crashed program in its same frozen state.....I mean...seriously GTF outta here!
I have now gotten rid of Windows 8, have installed Windows 7 (whilst upgrading from W7 to W8 is a piece of cake, someone somewhere has ensured going in the opposite direction is a real run around the table), and save for a DX12 release being exclusive to some future Metro based W9 or something, I cant see myself going back to it or anything like it.
The likelihood is, that you are going to go with Windows 8, because:
a) it is modern
b) everyone is telling you 'it is actually pretty good'.
But I am finding that the consensus of W8 on tech forums does not correlate with what most people I know in the real world seem to think of it. You have been warned.
EDIT: Sorry, I posted this without reading the second page of the thread. So, as I 'predicted', you went with W8, and just as I did, you are having serious issues with it that go way beyond being annoyed with the retarded touchscreen system. Although you have now unfortunately paid for Win8, I am sure you are resourceful enough to get a fully operational copy of Windows 7 installed on your PC, cost free.
