I am currently getting together all the components to build anew gaming machine.
The one thing i havent really specced is the OS.

What do i go for guys, 7 or 8?

Thanks for your input

Go straight to 8.1 Update 1.

Use StartIsBack or Start8 if you don't like the metro UI.

I assume you don't already have a license?

If not go with Windows 8.1 as KIA says, if you don't like the UI, install StartIsBack, Start8 or ClassicShell.

Using KIA's linked ISO for Windows 8.11 would be a good idea.

Well I would suggest trying windows 10 evaluation and see how you go before buying 8.1

I've to disagree, pointless sticking a light beta preview build of Win10 no matter how stable which expires in April, later builds especially RTM build will be a lot different with regards to added features/tuning etc...

I say make a choice between 7 and 8 and go for it,8.1 would be my personal opinion.

Hi all,

It seems general opinion is 8.1 and Start8.

I am familiar with 7 but not 8 - but with the Start8 add-on it must be the way to go.

Thanks for all of your input guys, its appreciated.

I used 8, in preference to 7, for a friend's PC but only because I found out about Classicshell... otherwise it would have been 7. Seems Start8 is more popular here - is there a reason for that?

Better design and icons, the last time I compared the two. Either way, I like to support developers.

Got to admit, I've only used Win8 for about 4 hours on a VM and wasn't keen. I've noticed my PC start to slow a bit for my liking (I like to format and start fresh about 3 times a year).

Think, once I've completed my current Skyrim runthrough (I ain't backing up 200 mods haha) I'll move to 8.1. Should fly on my 240GB SSD :D

My dad's just ordered an 8.1 laptop too so I'd best get used to it I can keep up with his myriad or support questions! :D

I avoided 8 for years despite buying a cheap copy when it was released. But a few weeks ago I finally installed it. I hate Metro but classic shell has fixed that so it now looks like 7. Happy with it now.

in windows 8.1 you can set it to load straight in to the desktop and not the metro UI, thts is what I have done.

I tried it but that was because I could make it like windows 7 otherwise I wouldn't have bothered.
