I'm not too sure which section this should be in, although I didn't want to cram up the hard drive section any more! So I thought this would be a reasonable place for the question. So, What is the best size partition to put windows 7 on, and windows 7 only. So if my computer messes up, I can just format that partition.

oh ok, well it's just gonna be win7, programs, media, games etc.. on another partition. So I reckon 35-45GB? I don't want to skim it too short! oh btw, I have a 640gb wd caviar black, with about 230gb of media/games/programs. Thanks anyway :) what do you reckon to that 35-45GB though ?

will the stuff I put on my primary partition, the one with win7 on, run faster?

upgrade or custom (advanced) ? just installing. BTW, i've took out my other C drive

I did it and it came up with a horrible nasty error:

windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing

bearing in mind that I have no drivers or anything on the drive. What shall I do ?

i clicked up on custom--all my data is backed up, and then I went on a formatted partition. with 75GB of space on it?

My windows 7 64 bit ultimate was hovering around 24.5 GB until yesterday (I then downloaded service pack 1). I had to resize my partition upto 35GB, and now it's about 28.5GB used.

I would say you ideally want at least 50GB to not worry about it, if not 60GB if it's JUST the operating system on that partition.

I accept what your trying to say, but I can't even get it to work! This is my first install of windows anyway

Every time I try and re-install, it's coming up with error , after error, after error... bootmgr errors, disk read errors, WTF! its a western digital caviar black 640gbps sata 3 *6gbps*

How do I get a vista disk, and I'm running a FULL test on my Drive, It's just I think I've done it before *the extended test* and it passed! wtf!

lol, after months of time since i started this thread, my pc got up and running properly again, I dont know how, but it seemed fine a couple of weeks after :) Thanks for the help of people in this thread :D
