Ok heres my problemo...

I bought windows 7 pro 32bit during the student promotion months and months back and as such recieved a serial number and a download link for the .iso by email. So i have no physical disc or anything. I didnt bother downloading the .iso as i wasnt planning on installing it until i did an upgrade and i knew i could just grab an oem .iso from somewhere on the net when i needed it...

Anyhow the time has come for said upgrade and have surmised that 64bit is def the way to go as i use CS5 and want to chuck a nice 6GB of ram into the new box. Premiere cs5 and after effects cs5 are also 64bit only....

So my question is this, if i download an oem copy of 7 pro 64bit will my 32bit serial work on it? Bearing in mind that said serial has never been used and is of course legit and paid for.

Any advice is muchly appreciated :)

But using a 32bit key will install the 32bit os no? The dvd are all the same I believe. It is the key that changes what is installed.

Nope. When you buy Retail you get two DVDs - 32bit and 64bit. The key only corresponds to the Windows type [OEM vs Retail] and Edition [Home, Pro etc].

I used my Retail 64bit DVD to install Windows 7 using a Student Upgrade key.

The DVD's are different, the keys are the same.

Thats why I got 2 DVD's in my retail box, but only 1 key. OEM is the same.

Awesome, thanks a lot guys, i feared i may have to buy the 64bit version which would be a needless expense.

So basically i just need to grab an oem version of pro 64bit? Im not sure what version the student edition is? Oem or retail? Basically i dont wanna put the new rig together and have the key rejected....

I presume its a retail version?

Thanks again

Ok turns out the student version is an "upgrade" version. I know this is just the same basically as any other version, im just wondering if the key is linked to the upgrade version or can i use any .iso i grab?

Thanks

I installed and activated a Retail x64 disc on my laptop using the key supplied with the Dell x32 disc. Worked fine :)
