1) alt tab needs pressing twice
2) audio glitches badly and is not implemented with two channels and no stereo mix. (could be esi fault)
3) breadcrumbs
4) qlive disables aero when closing (qlive blame win7)
5) no xvid codec support
6) no mpeg 2 support, extremely dodgy
7) control panel too many items and not organised properly
8) no advanced file type changes (have to install 3rd party software)
9) insane disk activity from system process, looks like it is scanning all my hard drives, disk activity on drive L: for no apparent reason. this is after turning off all the search and indexing, superfetch all of it.
10) after installing windows 7 two of my hard drives started clicking when they were accessed, they were perfectly fine in xp like 30 min earlier. Started getting the warning that the drive was damaged and that i should back up data. Have backed it up, now every time i go to the drive it takes a 10 seconds to view the data and the drive makes weird clickign noises like it is a dvdrom drive.

other than that i like it, the aero is cool. nice system monitor and the ssd makes it nice and fast :D

1. Works fine here.
2. Soundcard problems
3. ?
4. Qlives fault
5. XVid does work fine - think I used a Vista x64 codec pack.
6. By default there is - DVD's play fine under Windows Media Centre - may have to download playready but that maybe vista
7. Fine?
8. Don't get what you're on about
9. Windows 7 takes a few days - it will defrag (scheduled task) when its idle, etc. so I'd leave it alone for a couple of hours.
10. Hard-drive was obviously on its way out its not windows fault really.

There seems to be a real problem with looking at problem regarding windows 7, almost like the apple fan boys are, but for windows 7....

These are the problems that i have identified with my experience. I do not think number 10 is a cool new feature. I'll send you my bricked 1tb then, you can plug it in and see how cool of a feature it is...

Other than that, all the 10 problems still stands.

1) alt tab needs pressing twice
No issue here on any of my W7 machines. None with client machines either. Does Win Key + Tab [Flip3D] need pressing twice also?
2) audio glitches badly and is not implemented with two channels and no stereo mix. (could be esi fault)
Again, no issue. W7 [and Vista] can be a pain to get right if there are multiple sound devices, but usually fine once sorted.
3) breadcrumbs
Not sure what issue you are having... Care to explain?
4) qlive disables aero when closing (qlive blame win7)
So thousands of apps work fine, but it is still W7s fault?
5) no xvid codec support
Download a codec pack...
6) no mpeg 2 support, extremely dodgy
See above
7) control panel too many items and not organised properly
You can change it to categories view as in Vista. You could also use the search to find something specific - both in the CP and in the Start Menu [you can find virtually anything from the Start Menu Search]
8) no advanced file type changes (have to install 3rd party software)
Again could you be specific?
9) insane disk activity from system process, looks like it is scanning all my hard drives, disk activity on drive L: for no apparent reason. this is after turning off all the search and indexing, superfetch all of it.
None of my machines exibit abnormal disk activity, at least none that I have noticed. But I have seen this mentioned by others before.

W7 can't physically break a HDD. Have you ran any diagnostic tools on your HDDs? Have you tried them in any other computer not running W7?

It may just be a coincidence, but I agree it is strange two drives should start acting up. Did you make any hardware changes prior to installing Windows 7?

It really is a very good OS and I am sorry you are experiencing some problems. I have been lucky with my own machines and haven't come across anything that has truely annoyed me - not yet at least!

The real test came when a few clients obtained some Windows 7 machines. "Users" can break anything and so far the only problem we have found is a weird permissions issue when downloading files from a certain FTP server. It is isolated to one machine though, so not a general fault.

I also agree it is awesome with an SSD :D W7 handles them very well and my machine is like greased lightning with dynamite up its bum.

Warning you your disk is about to die so you can back up your data? I had the exact same thing happen after I upgraded to Vista and it was right about the drive - it was on it's way out. And it was a rather tongue-in-cheek comment, I can sympathise with data loss.

wow windows key and tab :O didn't even know that was there, i think the alt+tab problem is temperamental or only occurs on certain applications, i have not pin pointed what causes it yet, but could be 3rd party.

there is no way to turn off breadcrumbs without disabling aero which is frustrating for a lot of people as there is no need to force "features" on to users. i don't like breadcrumbs because it ignores certain folders and the drive that i am on, so i have to click to reveal the path and the drop down is useless for me. if it can be disabled why not just add a tickbox, like they are trying to be difficult with that one...

sound issues, in xp the esi drivers had channel 1 and channel 2 cause i have 2 channel sound card, but esi said it is win 7 limitation.

who ever fault the qlive one is, it is still an annoying problem for many...

there is no xvid codec support, the xvid codec http://www.xvid.org/ probably just take time for them to release a compatible version..

no mpeg 2 support i had to install this. which i thought was ridiculous. considering the last update was from 2006. also, when using haali renderer with this codec the picture quality is terrible, when using overlay mixer the whole screen goes funny.

control panel i thought was poorly designed, my opinion, but i see no need to have links to printers and devices on completely different cp applets, it is just sloppy they could have put 20% of that into one applet as tabs. it is setup so my grandma can use it, with no advanced mode that is just straight forward options.

there is no way to change the edit with or print to right click context menu options, change icons for file types etc. the only thing you can do is change the application for a specific file type. i had to install default programs editor, which is what windows 7 should have.

as for my hard drive, i blame windows 7 because i don't believe in coincidences, i have been using that hd perfectly since i got it.

What if they really were broken and XP simply didn't know any better? You ought to run some diagnostics using the HDD manufacturers own tools. It may show the same issues.

As for changing default programs, just search for default programs in the Start Menu search bar and you will get precisely the tool you want.

any hard drive problems after installing windows 7 post them here, we can see how common this "feature" is..

i have had to take my one samsung 1 tb that is under 2 years old out my box before windows 7 kills it, now it has started on my samsung 500gb. which one is next...]

I have disabled write cache on the 500gb and hopefully this will solve it, if it does i will put the 1tb back in and do the same and see if it fixes it.

What exact errors are you getting, could you post some screenshots?

I have never heard of any Windows OS breaking HDDs. And have you done what I suggested and ran diagnostics with the manufacturers tools to confirm any damage?

If you have a spare drive you can test with, I would check it with one of the diagnostic tools and then run it in Windows 7 for a while. Then if you get errors check it again with the diagnostics.

I have been on these forums a while, particularly the Windows section, and I believe you are the first person to have issues with Windows 7 and their HDDs apparantly breaking.

yes there are no errors it just freezes my pc and makes noises for a few seconds then comes back to normal occasionally.

but the drive is fine, no errors, nothing, it seems like a drive/firmware issue rather than an actual problem with the hard drive, only explanation i have.

i have about 5 hds in and i have taken some of them out to see if it was a psu issue after installing the new ssd, but even with 3 hds in it still was occuring. strange though that i took the 1tb samsung out that was having the most problems and the other drives were ok when this was having problems. then i take that out and the problems start on other drives :(

can someone please tell me if my drives are setup incorrectly ?

I have been reading up on this active partition aspect and i think i might need to setup my SSD (60gb) as the active partition and mark the others non active.

Is that correct ? will it cause problems either way ?

What are your powersaving settings for the drives? if set to sleep after x, where x is a short time, then that might be why you hear noises ona ccess, as it reactivates the drives each time you access?

thanks, yes i went into advanced power settings when i first installed windows 7 and disabled hard drive power settings. but i just went in to it again and it was set to 20 mins.... will plug the other drive back in and see if this is what was causing it.

i have just copied over some test files to the 1tb samsung drive as i had formatted it completely. So far so good, will see if it acts up again.

edit: ok it is working now, i don't want to hear any comments :D
