I currently have Windows XP 32bit installed and would like to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional. As I am a student I am entitled to a large discount on the Windows 7 Professional Upgrade. Will this enable me to upgrade from XP straight to 7, or do I need to buy the full version?

Upgrade version should work fine, it just requires a Windows install of some kind. However because you're going from XP to 7 you'll probably need a full re-install.

You need to do a full reinstall - I brought a new HDD when I did what you are going to do, but now isn't a good time to do that so make sure you backup everything that matters.

Because I did a fresh install I had problems and had to use Scenario 4 in the following so I could activate it:

BTW since you can get student software, make sure to make the most of it. I also got Office 2010 and Photoshop CS4. When I got Win7 it was the same price for the Pro and Home editions so I got the Pro which turned out to be very fortunate, as I needed to install the XP Mode for some ark-ware I have to use for work, and also for my Nikon scanner.
