windows 7 question

Hey all,

building a new machine. All the bits arrived today, apart from the memory, however I have some spare memory I can use to at least get the system up and running.

However, I had a nagging doubt in the back of my mind that I was hoping you guys will be able to confirm for me.

If I build the system with one set of RAM, and swap it out when the new set arrives..am I going to have to get a new copy of windows 7?

for the record I've ordered a copy of windows 7 64 ultimate.

Is the win 7 oem or retail?

In this instance it isnt an issue as swapping ram doesnt affect the OS, the only time it will really be an issue is if you buy an oem OS and then change motherboard.

If its retail it can be reused as many times as you like.

RAM wont be an issue.

Out of curiosity, why Windows 7 Ultimate? What do you plan to use to make it worth the rather large price tag?

it's OEM version and not retail. Just the RAM would be changed...nothing else. everything else is brand spanking new except the memory :-)

Sirius, good question and one I cannot answer properly I'm afraid. It was just my preference to go for it. In many eyes, I may of made an incorrect choice as to the benefits it would provide over a different version, cost etc and I do agree with you on the cost front.

So there was no real reason why I chose it..i just did. At that point in time I'd spent hours researching processors, GPU's, motherboards, RAM, SSD's, hybrids and SATA's...the last bit was the OS, it was 03.00am so I may of just gone..sod it and plunked for it. But it's what i ordered. If i made an error of judgment, im prepared to live with it.

Well, it's not like it's the end of the world! Just Professional or even Home Premium may have suited your needs for a much lower price tag! In any case, you will have no problem changing your RAM. At worst you will need to make a 5 minute phone call to a robot. :)

haha yeh...last time i did that, some guy on the other end called me a liar :-) Wanted my company name if i was a system builder (i do builds for people in spare time) but dont work for a company nor am i self employed.

He said i got a dodgy copy, or i downloaded it off the web (which was rubbish as i had proof of purchase).

maybe this time i might get more luck..or a support rep with a brain and good attitude.
