Hi,
I need some help please!!
I have put together a new computer using this bundle from overclockers http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-029-OE&tool=3. It came with 2 x 2GB Patriot memory, not Corsair as it said but I don't think that will make a difference?.. I'm sure Overclockers know what they are doing! This is the first PC I've put together so i'm still learning.
Hardware is:
Intel Pentium Dual-Core E6500 @ 3.60GHz
Gigabyte GA-P43-ES3G Intel P43 Motherboard
2x2GB Patriot DDR2 PC2-8500
Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3 1TB HDD
I tried installing Windows 7 64 bit and 32 bit at least a dozen times - trying various solutions other people have used to install windows 7 (after trawling forums for the best part of this week) - because it kept crashing to BSOD (blue screen of death acronym I'm assuming!..). I've installed Win XP with absolutely no problems and it runs fine, and after resetting the BIOS to 'optimal settings' (upon it's suggestion) I've at last somehow managed to install windows 7 but it crashes on a regular basis whenever I try to do something like install network card, install game, click the wrong thing etc..
The vast majority of the BSODs error messages are related to the RAM and as far as I have been able to work out everything else works fine. I've tried running Memtest86+ off 2 different floppy disks for each stick of RAM but every time it stops at 21% on test 5 but shows no errors up to that point.
I'm starting to think about maybe just installing Windows 7 to my laptop and Win XP to the desktop but a) I am guessing that this problem will just rear it's head some time later on, even though XP runs fine now, and b) I just don't want to, it's not why I got Win 7!
I've pretty much exhausted what I can try given what I know so any suggestions as to what to do next would be massively appreciated.
