I wasnt even doing anything, just talking on msn and boom, windows 7 changes to basic colour mode.

Could this be a gfx card problem?

Using a gts 250, latest drivers.

I've found it's when your RAM fills up too much, windows starts cutting back on things to stop your PC clogging up too fast.

I used to have this problem with much older drivers, it disappeared after some updates I guess. Some older games and applications turn off Aero at start up, this is nothing unusual.

Use to do this after the first few weeks when I installed Windows 7. The CPU usage was oddly also high, so I checked task manager and it seemed some sort of Windows benchmarking program was running. Everything went back to normal after a few minutes.

Oh, I remember now. It's Windows Experience Index running up at default. I just turned it off as well as automatic defrag of hard drives.

The Windows performance evaluation app will run early in the morning (think it's set for 12-1am) if hardware or driver versions have been changed recently, but you haven't run the evaluation yet. This is to refresh the performance rating, nothing more, and once finished you'll get your regular desktop settings back automatically.
