I'm one of those people still busily running windows XP. But recently I effectively replaced my computer*, and am now wondering if it's worth switching to 7 before I get everything too well set up in XP.

I'm all for the more modern operating system and specifically the DX11 support (My graphics card supports it and is currently a bit bored running DX9), but I have concerns about compatibility that won't stop nagging at me. Most software I use is 7 compatible, but as an example I have older games that don't list 7 or even vista in some cases. Will they be able to run or are they a dead loss?

I've done a lot of looking around on google for information, but there's nothing quite like peoples actual experiences when it comes to stuff like this. I can get it at the student pricing so it's not a vast sum of money. Any advice would be very much appreciated! :)

*If you're interested in the story, I bought myself a new graphics card and a power supply that could handle it, all was well, and then a month later my motherboard died of old age. So I now have a brand new case, motherboard, CPU, RAM, graphics card, disk drive (As the old one had the wrong connector for the motherboard), and power supply. It was an expensive month.

I, personally, would go to Windows 7 x64. If you list the games then people here can probably help. At the very, very worst you could dual boot into XP.

With all the newer hardware that it sounds like you have it would be silly to remain on an older OS where by you can't use most of it.

I'd be going to the 64 bit version if I did upgrade, forgot to mention that! But that is part of my logic, the operating system is a bit dated now by comparison with what is a pretty high spec system at the moment.

I was a die hard XP user. Skipped Vista, Vista SP1 and 8 months ago jumped to Win 7. XP is naff compared to it now, could never go back.

As for compatibility I cannot really comment as I don't run any legacy stuff, but as of yet I have not come across anything I would want to run that I could not.

Window 7 64 bit is my recommendation, I have it on three pc's & one lappy, far better than xp.
And with a 64 bit o/s your not strangled by the 4gb memory limit which xp has.

I have a old plotter, plus several printers about 8 years old & they work flawlessly with W7.

I used to be a big fan of staying with what I had, resisted vista for as long as possible. Got it one day and couldn't believe how silly id been... Got w7 when I needed it (for my mac) and its excellent.

Just get w7 x64 and if you really really need to run something old there's 101 ways around most things so its not the end of the world :)

Seems to be a strong vote for 7 then...any opinions on which version? I can only get professional or ultimate with the student discount, from what I can see ultimate really isn't worth it. Is the consensus to skip ultimate edition, or is it worth the extra £20 for some reason I've missed?

Edit: Further research showed no reason to go for ultimate, so Professional is on its way now. Thanks all for your assistance. :)
