windows 7 remote desktop and windows xp

I take it you've checked the box enabling older versions of Remote Desktop (i.e. preVista) to connect to 7?
Other than that, check you're using an Admin account (or give the account you're using Remote Desktop permissions) on Win7.
If neither works, consider rechecking the network connection.

im connecting from work to home ........no firewall apart from the routers own which has never caused problems....
i login in with my ip and the windows 7 screen comes up with my username allready on there and then i clock on my name and enter password and nothing..........password or user name incorrect

Did you try XP-Win7 from within the network/Win7-Win7 from home?
Could also try just creating a new account specifically for remote access, but I don't see how that would help, it's just one of those things to try anyway..

So you've tried a work computer to the computer you want to connect to, within your company's intranet, and its worked. What OS was it running? Try it with one running XP, see if it still connects.
Try connecting to your work computer from home using a pc running Win7.
Other than those, try creating a new user account on your work pc, giving it remote access rights, and try connecting to that instead of your regular account when remote desktopping, and see if that works (unlikely, but worth a try if the above failed).
Oh, well same thing. Try connecting with XP within the home, and try connecting with Win7 from work. If it stops working at home/starts working at work, its an XP compatibility problem.
Try MACHINENAME\USERNAME? Had this issue with W2K8 Server and noticed that the domain would sometimes default to the wrong domain and had to put in MACHINENAME\USERNAME or DOMAINNAME\USERNAME.
