Hey all

Not sure what it is, but recently my pc has been having random slow downs.

I mean, even as I type this (im not that fast a typer lol) but it freezes and then catches up with itself.

I'm running a e6700 at 3ghz and 4gb of ram.

My kaspersky occasionally as a mechanical cog next to it when the freeze occurs, but it also happens randomly too.

I've also noticed when playing games I get a freeze then like a 2fps for about 6 seconds and then everything catches up.

Any ideas what it could be? I've not had this problem before, and the pc is freshly formatted with over 75% free.

Hard drive is a samsung f2 1tb.

could it be anything of windows 7 features such as defrag etc running?

all help appriciated.

This could be difficult to isolate but I would probably start by generating a system health report and having a close look at it. Another option is to download process explorer and use this to try and determine if a specific process associated with a program is causing the freezes to occur.

Task Manager should show you what is nailing it, keep it open in 'processes view' then switch to it when it's playing silly beggars

Or use Process Explorer as said above, it's Task Manager on steroids :D

Process Explorer displays a nice little graph in your system tray too, so you can see when something is hammering your CPU. Hovering over the graph in ProcExplorer proper will tell you which process(es) it is.

Thanks guys :) Will check it out, but often the hard drive reads when it slows down... as if i'm accessing tb's of data lol... so wonder if it something to do with the hard drive?

Well, possibly. But until you check ProcExplorer at the next slow down you wont know. It would be worth checking all the processes in the list to see if anything obvious leaps out at you. Perhaps a goingToThrashUrHDD.exe process? :p

It could be your HDD waking up, which can cause slow downs, though I doubt your HDD going to sleep would happen during gaming!
