Microsoft has just released an RC version of its upcoming service pack. The version, windows6.1-KB976932, has been officially released and this may have been done because of the recent leak.

The SP1 will provide several enhancements to Windows 7 including Remote FX and many incremental updates to the platform. The SP1 can be found here and weighs in at 865.4MB for the 64 bit version and 514.7MB for the 32 bit version.

Microsoft releases service packs incrementally to make it easier for users to quickly bring their OS up to speed with all of the latest security patches and enhancements. Occasionally, Microsoft will introduce new features in service packs. Service packs are always provided free of charge, provided that you have a genuine copy of Windows.

As this release is an RC, a release candidate, it should be a stable version of the service pack, but as with any software that is not the final release version, install at your own risk.

Remote FX is like remote desktop on steroids - you can remote in and do 3D stuff and watch video which the current version isn't really designed to do.

Thanks for the heads up, both with sp1 and RemoteFX.

Just to be clear, RemoteFX is not a new standalone product from Microsoft. Rather, it describes a set of RDP technologies - most prominently graphics virtualization and the use of advanced codes - that are being added to Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1; these technologies are based on the IP that Microsoft acquired and continued to develop since acquiring Calista Technologies.

So think of Microsoft RemoteFX as the ‘special sauce’ in Remote Desktop Services that users will be able to enjoy when they connect to their virtual and session-based desktops and applications over the network. With Microsoft RemoteFX, users will be able to work remotely in a Windows Aero desktop environment, watch full-motion video, enjoy Silverlight animations, and run 3D applications – all with the fidelity of a local-like performance when connecting over the LAN.

Their desktops are actually hosted in the data center as part of a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) or a session virtualization environment (formerly known as Terminal Services). With RemoteFX, these users will be able to access their workspace via a standard RDP connection from a broad range of client devices – rich PCs, thin clients and very simple, low-cost devices.

I just want the RemoteFX standalone installer (not possible), Nothing else in SP1 is of any note.

yeah its just a round up of patches, be handy when doing fresh installs, as there are a fair few updates out now, i guess win7 is just over a year old in terms of final release

This release is mainly about giving dynamic memory to Hyper-V and adding RemoteFX to Windows Server 2008 R2 although RemoteFX support capability is being added to Windows 7. For Windows 7 users it will just be a bug fix roll-up so I will wait for the official release candidate.

It just shows how stable and great Win7 is when a Service pack is just a few additional things and fixes :p

Nice, sounds like it could be good, especially if you have a decent connection between the computers.

In theory any sort of wired or good wireless connection would be fine - I'm thinking of the possibilities with thin clients/tablet PCs. Definitely going to try it out at some point.
