Is it worth holding a purchase of a Netbook for Windows 7 Starter installed?
I’m looking to buy an Asus eee 1008 netbook with WinXP installed; this week they have announced a refresh with 7 Starter. A quick search on the internet reveals it’s locked down in some areas – i.e. desktop background, no aero interface etc.

Is there anything on 7 worth waiting for?

In all honesty, I'd rather use Windows XP on a netbook than Windows 7 Starter, which is severely limited. It's more limited Windows 7 Home Basic, which is only for emerging markets. I would recommend buying the netbook with Windows XP installed.

Windows 7 does offer more benefits than just looking pretty.. don't disregard it without trying it, or at least waiting for people's reports on what it's like on netbooks. Maybe get XP with Win7 upgrade option if possible? (Upgrade as in free Win7 - no upgrade installation from xp to 7)

Thanks for the input - I've ordered the netbook with WinXP.

I have Windows 7 HP ordered for my desktop and other laptop anyway. The netbook is just going to be used for Holidays, travelling etc so having XP isn't a major drawback.

Holidays, travelling? If you are taking such things on holiday I would suggest you need a complete rethink on your life. As an alternative I would suggest a GF or a wife? The only other additions would be clothes money camera and a few good books.

To be fair it depends what kind of traveling you're doing. Long flights or coach journeys, periods of waiting in airports. I would have found a small computer really handy when I travelled to book flights and excusions, arrange my bank accounts, get information and to stay in touch with people. I had to walk around until I found an Internet cafe.

If you were taking a computer away to play games on then yeah I see your point but as a tool to get things done I don't see much wrong with it.

That's why I take a few good books, great companion on long journeys. The last thing I want to do when going on holiday is keep in touch. The whole point of "getting away" is just that i.e. getting away. I don't even take a mobile phone with me and those at left at home are given strict instructions I'm not to be contacted unless its a death or war situation and I'm not kidding either and not to many wars in the UK of late. My favourite word when I'm on holiday is "incommunicado"

Thanks for the tips
