i want to install windows 7 onto another hd, but it is currently installed on another hd.

will i have to plug in the other hd with windows 7 64 on it to uninstall it, before i install it onto the new hd?

also, just to have this clarified:

i want to install windows 7 64 over vista 32, but i want to keep the windows.old folder with all my files intact.

this should be ok?
 
You cannot upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit.
It will wipe the drive, if it is on a separate drive, and you will use that drive for your OS, then the old files will remain on the older drive.

Have it disconnected when you install to the new drive, plug it in after. this will prevent MBR issues. You will have to reinstall all your programs and copy across your files manually.
 
hd1 has windows 7 64 on it.
hd 2 has vista32 on it.

i have the windows 7 installation disc.

will i be allowed to install my windows 7 64 onto hd2?

that would mean i would then have windows 7 installed on hd 1 and hd2 at the same time.

is this possible?

i thought as it is currently registered with hd 1, i will not be allowed to install it onto hd2.

can this be done, as i am thinking of the eula issue.

I really cannot believe that this is an "accident".

didn't really answer my question, but sorry to hear it ;)

so back to it:

what should i do to proceed?

i just want to do things properly, and not lose all my files etc.
 
Probably some legal rubbish why you cannot have Windows 7 64bit and 32bit on two different drives but I would go for it. Just unplug the windows 7 32 bit drive before installing the 64bit over vista.
 
no, i had exactly that for a few months.

vista 32 on one, windows 7 on the other.

i just went into the bios at boot and selected which drive i wanted.

i'll make sure to unplug, better safe than sorry..
 
You best bet is to unplug the current Win 7 drive, back up everything on the Vista drive, then do a clean 7 install over it. Since it's going from 32-bit to 64-bit, nothing can be carried over and will wipe the drive regardless. No need to "uninstall" anything. Should be fine as the motherboard is still the same.
 
when you say 'backup', you mean drag all the stuff i need onto another drive?

will i not be given the option to keep all files (music etc) in a windows.old file?

i'm sure i was given that option when i changed from vista 32 to windows 7 a few years back.
 
Yes, to another drive or external storage. You will not be given an option to keep them, even in the .old file. That only applies if you're going 32-bit to 32-bit or 64-bit to 64-bit.

i must have been confused.

a few years back, i must have reinstalled vista 32 again over itself, i remember seeing windows.old as an option.
