Why is Windows update so temperamental, brand new install on a machine, literally nothing installed bar the OS and yet it fails to do Windows updates..

You would have thought by now MS would have sorted out something that appears so simple...

Yeah that's what I was thinking..
Also struggled to get updates on my old SurfaceRT (lol) that came back to me the other day after years at a friends house, he finally bought his missus a Surface3...

Its well reported the suspicion that MS are crippling W7 updates so that more upgrade to W10.

Could well be. The same sort of thing happened when 7 came out and they started phasing out XP.

If it's a brand new install with nothing else on the drive, give WSUS Offline a try (latest build is 10.6.3). I did this at the weekend and it worked fine after I'd had a lot of hassle with 7 not updating.

I found WSUS Offline was amazing for updating a clean install of Win 7. My disk is an SP1 disk thank goodness.

I had a slight issue with an install that was stuck at updates beyond March 2016. We ran WSUS on my mum's laptop yesterday and even WSUS wouldn't work, it kept getting stuck as well.

When we finaly gave up and rebooted, it had done something crazy with the file system (docs/programs missing etc). Found the docs in a very random location, backed them up and did a system restore. Everything's now back to normal.

Yup, totally fresh Win7 install, it picks up the NIC itself so literally nothing else is installed, dropped the rollup on it last night, will drop back on it later, failing that it'll be wsus...

If you are so disturb with Windows 7 failing to windows updates,, why don't you update your operating system and make it Windows 10 ????

After waiting for windows auto and manual update for more than 24 hrs last week it failed to download anything after a clean install of win 7SP1.

Downloaded and ran these 2 updates in this order:

Windows Update Diagnostic:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/gp/windows-update-issues

Windows Update Client for Windows 7:

KB3138612

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/3138612

If like me you are running win 7 64-Bit click link below

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=51212

After both these updates windows update worked in a few minutes.

Retested again after going back to a system image before these updates and no updates until I ran these 2 again the Windows Update Diagnostic and installed updated KB3138612. Then updates worked again. :)

Can't be 100% certain it will fix your problem, but for me it did.
