Windows 7 Upgrade Offer

Since windows 7 has now officially been release, I've just been helping the girlfriend, who bought a new laptop a few weeks ago, (and Acer Aspire 7735Z).

This laptop came with information stating that it's eligible for upgrade to Windows 7 for free.

Well I've just been helping her apply for it here : http://www.acer.com/windows7upgrade/

They want £12.5 for it :eek:

. Alright it's not a huge amount, but doesn't it defeat the object of a "free upgrade"? £12.50 is quite a lot for a free upgrade.

So they want to send the disc out, but I've already got one, and we know you buy the license not the disk, so what's up with them charging £12.50 for it?

Does anyone think I'd be able to sort out an "online" upgrade? As I know Microsoft do such a thing from their own website.

Sony are charging £20 handling for for their free upgrade - the girlfriend just did that on her laptop. Beats buying it outright, though only by about £10 because we're students.

How on earth do people still think "free" actually does mean free?!

There is always and admin fee, or a delivery fee, or a handling fee, or a fee fee...

To be honest, £12.50, hardly breaking the bank though is it?

That's not the point though, if something is free, then you pay no money for it.

Last year I bought Native Instruments Guitar Rig 2 for about £250. A few weeks later, Guitar Rig 3 was announced, and those who have bought 2 before a specific date got a free upgrade to it.

I qualified for a free upgrade, I emailed them my receipt and I received a download link a few days later with a new serial key to be used with it.

So why should I be surprised that something advertised as free, is in fact not actually free?

So calm down with your implications that I'm stupid for expecting something listed as free to be free.

That's utterly horrendous.

She's a student currently in University at the moment too so I'd be surprised if she couldn't get it on that too.

That's not as bad as HP, who were charging £40 for the delivery of half price vista, I should have reported them to trading standards.

There is an article in the latest issue of PC Pro about this they found all but one company that offered a free upgrade where charging people.

That's nothing! my dad paid £12 for "postage" on his Home Prem upgrade from Acer on a new laptop, my sister needs to pay £19 from Asus !!!!!

What about people who brought the oem Vista and have the upgrade voucher?I have two from customers I need to do over the weekend but I havent told them if there is a admin fee yet.

Don't worry about people who have brought Vista, it's an entirely different situation.
