Windows 7 Upgrade Option Question

Hi,

I've got a quick question about the Windows 7 Upgrade Option that I'm hoping you may be able to assist with. I have contacted Microsoft about this but thought I may get a speedier reply here.

Towards the end of last year I purchased a prebuilt machine from OcUK containing Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit. This came with a Windows 7 Upgrade Option pamphlet enabling me to apply for Windows 7 Home Premium.

At the time I purchased the computer Windows 7 was not available and hence I used Vista.

I am now part way through my academic year at University and really do not wish to upgrade at this time - I have lots of software installed, everything is compatible and I simply do not have the time to upgrade; Both installing and "learning" any changes to the new OS. I know many people will say this is a foolish decision and that I will be perfectly fine but I am being very stubborn and really do not want to change OS right now... I'd like to wait until summer.

My upgrade voucher is only valid until the end of February and therefore if I wish to make use of it I need to do so before summer (And hence before I'd like to install the new OS).

Therefore, question is:

If I apply for Windows 7 Home Premium do I have to upgrade it immediately? And if not, does my Windows Vista license remain intact and fully legal? And will I have any trouble in installing Windows 7 Home Premium in the summer, when I am willing to change my OS?

I suppose my question is: When does my license legally change from Windows Vista to Windows 7? When I apply for Windows 7? Or when I install Windows 7 (At some later date)?

Thank you! :)

No, You can upgrade your system at any time in the future.

does my Windows Vista license remain intact and fully legal?
Your Vista licence will remain legal, even if you upgrade to Win 7, thus enabling you to return your system to Vista.

And will I have any trouble in installing Windows 7 Home Premium in the summer, when I am willing to change my OS?
You will have no problems there.

Oh, I thought that "upgrade" option effectively transferred your license from operating system to another? I assume, from you what have said, that I was wrong?

Can I confirm you are suggesting that both Vista and 7 licenses will remain legal and valid (E.g., I will "own" two Windows operating systems)?

Thank you! :)

One's a full license, the other's an upgrade. They're not independent, the validity of the upgrade license is reliant on you having a full license attached to that machine.

But the installation of the "upgrade license" operating system does not remove the ability to "downgrade" to the "full license" operating system at a later date?

From what you guys have said it seems I should have no problems at all ordering my 7 upgrade now and upgrading at a later date. This seems to even leave me with the option to come back to Vista (Albeit by removing 7; I assume I cannot have both installed at the same time?) at any time. Excellent :)

You won't have any problems. You certainly can't have them both installed on different machines, but I don't know if that extends to not having them both installed the same machine at the same time, i.e. dual booting. If you were to boot from DVD and go the Custom Install route, presumably it would detect the presence of a qualifying OS (i.e. Vista) then let you install Windows 7 to a separate partition.
