Comments please on the best way to upgrade from Vista to Windows 7. The upgrade seems tempting to retain all of my programmes and settings, but one of the reasons for the upgrade is slow startup, shutdown and periodoc hanging from Vista so I don't want to carry this forward.

The custom installation does not format the hard disk in any case although you lose all of your programmes and settings. Microsoft state there is no need to format the hard disk for Windows 7 installation although they give an option to do so if you want via the upgrade/disk options.

Another benefit of the upgrade and not formatting the disk means that the updates can be installed during the installtion.

Any advice and experiences of other members would be appreciated.

Having done it both ways myself I would back anything important up and just do a clean install letting W7 format your drive.

To clarify are you saying the Custom Installation or the Upgrade with the format option?
