OK so here's my problem.. I am a student so i am eligible for a windows 7 upgrade edition of a site which i am not allowed to name, however my problem is that for me to get the upgrade i need a legit copy of windows already installed on the PC and i haven't. but my mum has a Toshiba laptop with windows vista home premium on it, and i was wondering if it was possible to use the recovery CD to install vista on my desktop PC use the CD key of the laptop. Will that be classed as a legit copy of windows and allow me to use the upgrade edition from the website. oh and i will install another os on my mums laptop at a a later date as her laptop is a mess

Thank you

No, that is against the law. Your mother's disc is OEM and it's tied to her motherboard, also that is her COA licence. Your better off buying a full retail :(version of Win 7.

Simply install Win7 upgrade without entering a product key as that will give you the 30 day trial period, which should be long enough to figure out how to use google ;)

i see however on the website i am not allowed to say it says on the page of the product i want and i quote:

"Format: Official DVD or Download
(Product Key on back of media
or emailed with download)"

???????????????????????????? so why do i need a previous valid install of windows? is this just a scare tactic or is there something physically set to stop this

You can just install without a cd key first time round, then do an in place upgrade afterwards, is perfectly legal.

I'm sorry but i don't quite understand? what can i install without a key first time, vista or win 7? and after what can i do an in place upgrade, sorry to be so awkward :/

Install windows 7 first (clean install), the version that you ultimately want installed, without a cd key.

Then after that is complete run the installation again from inside windows and perform an in place upgrade to the same version of windows 7, this time using the cd key.
