Hi all,

I have pre-ordered my copy of Windows 7 pro 64bit and I am now wondering what if anything else on my system should I upgrade.

Or more importantly what you would upgrade and why?

I have a limited budget of £200 now but can save for the right upgrade(s).

System specs at the moment

XFX 780i mobo,
Intel Q6600 CPU @2.4Ghz, (been OC'd to 3.4 but put back)
8gb DDR2 crucial ballistix tracer ram @1000mhz
2 x 768mb BFG 8800 gtx OC2 graphics cards
Azuntech prelude soundcard
120 raptor hd
1 x 500gb hd 8mb cache
1 x 500gb hd 32mb cache

How would you upgrade and set up the system for Windows 7.
I am a gamer at heart, so that is my piority.

Thanks in advance
Jason

I think your system should just be able to run Aero :)

No upgrades needed unless you want to upgrade the graphics cards to a DX11 one (first release is in September by ATI I believe). I would not suggest this as you have a very quick (and expensive) graphics setup at the moment and there isn't going to be games that properly make use of DX11 for a while.

Thankyou cmndr andi for your reply,

I was worried about the age now of my 8800gtx's

Do you think I will need a DX11 card much before the end of 2010?

How do you suggest setting up the Hd's or any improvements I could do to decrease boot times, increase system responsiveness ect.?

Your PC spec looks good, and when you do upgrade, just enable the overclock again and put a new graphics card in. Im still using just one 8800GT and its coping well still, mind you I dont play to many games.

I really wouldn't bother. At a throw, I'd wait a few months for newer graphics cards and upgrade that later. If it was me then I would aim for a summer 2010 upgrade at the earliest

Edit:

I'm also on a single 8800GT, and haven't had any problems (except GTAIV, but I'm not pandering to such a ****tily coded game)

Thanks to spooter and scruffeh for your reply.

Its good to see a few more 8800 owners around.

All I see in the sigs normally is i7's and 285 and 295 cards, :(

No offence cmndr ;)

Maybe Im beginning to feel a little green :p

8800GTX SLI is still a very fast setup ( wish i still had mine ) and should handle most new game very nicely indeed. I'd reclock your CPU to at least 3Ghz as this could be bottlenecking your GFX cards.

W7 runs perfectly fine on all my machines, My main machine is similar spec to yours but with ATI and I have a 6 year old laptop with simgle core and 1.25 gb ram 9700 mobility gpu and it works perfectly on that too. It seems more scaleable than Vista.

Hi Meatloaf and thanks fior the reply, my gfx cars at the mo are set for 1680x1050, they are locked in sycn with the moniter and dont budge from the 60hz refresh rate. Would overclocking make any difference the the cards speed?
Pci bus locked, ram locked, I would only alter the FSB.

Would it make my whole system go like a bat out of hell? (pun intended ;))

@howiepoohs, Hello, and thanks, 9700 mobility GPU thats on a laptop correct?
It runs ok on that aswell?
