I got a upgrade pack for my xp to go to windows 7 just wondering if i can go from my 32bit xp to windows7 64bit? This is becouse i would like to use the hard drive for gaming on my next build.

uprades take a million years longer than fresh installs if you can source the installation CD and just use your key :D

there are reports of ppl taking 20hours to upgrade.. oh dear..

You'd get a better repsonse in the software forum but to answer your question no you can't. I personally don't upgrde I just perform a complete reinstall.

You can do an clean install with your upgrade media. Just boot from the DVD and choose Custom install, the installer will then check for a qualifying Windows installation (your 32bit XP) before proceeding.

If there's enough free space on the drive the installer will move your old XP files to a folder called Windows.old before installing Windows 7. If there isn't enough free space you'll need to click Drive options and format the drive/partition. Either way back up any important data beforehand.

No - unless you take special measures :)
You can use Zinstall XP7 to upgrade from XP to Windows 7. There is a discussion thread about it about a month back. In a nutshell, it can restore your XP apps, settings, files etc. after Windows 7 cleans them out (just don't format the drive...).
I'd suggest you reinstall games anyway, even if you use Zinstall, to get the best possible performance.

Its a upgrade pack so i cant fresh install from it i need xp or vista for it to work. But i do have the full version discs but i have used the insterlation key on it allready. I would really like to have the 64bit version but if that is not possible oh well.

Do you get a serial number with the upgrade pack? If you do then I think you should be able to use that on the full disc versions (so use the full disc to install but enter your upgrade pack key instead of the key you got with the full discs)

I'm pretty sure you can install fresh with that upgrade disc. I did with mine, although mine was through the student deal so maybe slightly different. But I'd be willing to bet my left shoe that it's exactly the same and would work for you.

The 'upgrade' is on the license, so as long as you are not also using your version of XP or Vista as well as your upgrade Win7 then it's all good.

Interesting read. It's a bit strange that so many people had to go through different methods though.

Fortunately for me Method 1 worked. I formatted my drive and installed from my upgrade disc, activated and hey presto. Finished. I also did this on a brand new SSD with no issues either.

But as said my upgrade was part of the student deal so whether that has any relevance I don't know. However I was led to believe it didn't.

I do think a *clean* install is nicer! :)

[edit] I just noticed we are now in Overclockers UK Forums > Software > Windows & Other Software

Teleportation! . . . . neat! :D
