Windows 7 upgrade

Hey, as soon as ive sorted out a few problems i am going to build my own pc from overclockers (i'll probably post that in a few days) but one problem is been as im a student i can get a cheap version of windows 7. However it is an upgrade from vista/xp and my new system won't have any os on it. I have an old XP disc somewhere but i think it may have already been used on a very old pc that isn't used anymore. Do you think that would work or will its use void it? thanks a bunch

You can use an Upgrade media to do a clean install of W7(Just a simple google search).
But the legitimacy of that installation can be questioned by some
