Hello,

I just built myself a new rig and installed windows 7 64 bit. I previously had the 32bit version registered on my old computer which is no longer in use. However whenever I try and activate windows online it states I can't activate it on this computer.

Has anyone else had the same problem and if so how do I solve it? I keep going round in circles with the Microsoft helpdesk.

Thanks in advance guys

So, you have a new computer with a new copy of Windows 7 64 bit that will not activate. Where does the 32 bit copy of Windows 7 come into it?

You will have to go through telephone activation, it won't activate automatically after those kind of changes. Again as Rodney says it's automated, you don't have to speak to anyone and it's an 0800 number, just follow the instructions on screen.

Hi

Essentially bought windows 7 pro and installed the 32bit version. Have now built myself a new rig and reinstalled windows 7 64 bit. However, it will not activate now. So its just a case of going through the automated procedure? Cheers for all your help with this guys

Depends, is your license OEM, Retail or an upgrade? If it's OEM or an upgrade then im pretty sure you cant switch between 32bit and 64bit.

Its the full retail edition of pro which I picked up when they were offering the discounts veyr briefly during launch.

So I just phone up using the new code it gives me and it will reactivate me? Bit gutted about it all to be honest as I was ecstatic I ahd built my first rig which was runnign and stable first go!

Yes you just phone up, follow the instructions and enter the installation ID via the phone keypad, confirm the OS is only installed on one computer, then type the confirmation ID it gives you and you're activated. Subsequent activations without significant changes to your hardware will happen automatically. It's easy, painless and normal procedure - absolutely nothing to be gutted about.
