I seem to have a jinx with USB flash drives. Bought a SanDisk Cruzer Edge 8GB yesterday. Tried copying 7Gb of files on to it, started really fast (estimated around 3 minutes) but after 10 seconds it crawled saying it would take almost an hour. I have tried it on a 120Mb file and it did the same, started really fast but after 10 seconds it crawled and took a good 20 seconds. I know this stick isn't a super fast USB drive but is it really that slow and why would it do it this way. Also why does Windows 7 take so blumin' long to cancel a transfer, it's painful!

It bases time remaining on size of files, lots of little ones will increase it.

Sounds like a problem with your usb ports or the usb controller.

Try the USB ports at the back if you are trying the ones at the front, might make a difference. Try using software to copy the files. I use total commander as a filemanager and that generally copies files instantly and if it freezes then you can just kill the process without freezing the whole pc.

I had issues in an old rig with USB ports at the front of my PC being slow. As groen said, try the ports at the back of your PC (ie directly connected to the motherboard)

Small number of files. I did use it through the hub on the monitor (Dell), will try the ports on the tower shortly.

EDIT - Tried the back ports and still get the same problem. When it hits the 'wall' it appears that it is trying to work out out what's going on (files left, size left, speed) and once it does it carries on copying. Going to try Total Commander. Which is the best speed test? I tried Crystal Disk Mark but it could only see my two internal drives (EDIT - just realised, I think I downloaded Crystal Disk Info not Mark).

EDIT - Total Commander seems to do the same. Took almost one minute to copy 150MB

EDIT - Hhhhhmmm these write speeds don't seem too good. I had a bog standard drive that was quite slow but thought this would be quicker. Dodgy or just this slow?

EDIT - Looks like the drive has a slow write speed and mine seems to be even slower :(. Will be taking this back and getting the Patriot Extreme Performance Xporter XT.

EDIT X - Took it back. This device was so slow it couldn't perform a Windows 7 installation! Decided to go with a Transcend JetFlash 700 USB3 16Gb instead of the Patriot. Not bad for £16 :D
