Hi all,

Might seem like a straightforward question now that details for how Windows 10 will be release was announced recently. However, I have Googled this question after the announcement and cannot find anyone who is currently discussing this in any forum.

Now that Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for 7, 8 and 8.1 users, is it worth actually paying for 8.1 right now? Or should I just sit tight with Windows 7 until 10 is released. This is a question I was asking myself before the announcement as it was rumoured at the time I was considering the move, the free upgrade would be for Win8 users only. If it's going to be free for me then that is both good and annoying as I was considering upgrading...as in... yesterday!

I'm a long time Windows 7 user and also a gamer. I have looked up the differences in gaming performance but I think at the end of the day I'm no longer the benchmark pusher and number chaser I used to be. I guess as long as Windows 8.1 is no slower than 7, it's not that important.

I was looking for change and do have experience of Win 8.1 on my Surface Pro but not on a desktop pc and with the exception of Metro (which I don't really like) the operating system itself is quite good, different and responsive.

I have also considered the fact that upon release, Windows 10 will not be without it's share of bugs, etc so upgrading to it straight away would not be so wise.

I assume there are many of you in the same position as me and that is why I want to know if any of you are considering just dumping the £70 on 8.1 now anyway and upgrading to 10 later on despite the free upgrade?

Thoughts?

My PC specs:
i5 4670k (overclocked to 4GHz)
Asus Maximus Gene VI
8GB DDR3 RAM
GTX 780 Ti
Crucial M4 128GB SSD (OS)
Crucial M4 256GB SSD (Games)
2 Mechanical Drives for everything else...
Corsair HX1000w PSU

There's still nothing wrong with Windows 7. Wait for 10 and get your free upgrade. Spending money on 8.1 now seems a little pointless.

oh easy, neither.

stay with windows 7. while 8 or 10 may have slight benefits in certain areas they also have gigantic pain in the bum issues. having uesd 8 on two machines since launch and 10 for the last handfull of days, neither have anything worth 5 pence over windows 7.

as others said, stick to windows 7 and then upgrade for free to windows 10.

I am using windows 10 preview (build 9926) and I quite like it, don't like the start menu but that can be sorted with classic shell :)

I would say try Windows 8 somewhere like a shop or friend's PC but now that Windows 10 is making progress and will be free for you, it hardly seems worth it to drop the money on it at this stage.

Yep, stick with Windows 7, then upgrade to Windows 10 for free when it becomes available. Although if you don't like it, Windows 7 will still be supported (under extended support) for some years yet.

Thank you all for replying and sharing your opinions, it cements my decision. I'll stick with Windows 7 until I'm sure 10 is past it's teething stage. Maybe a reinstall will do the machine good for a final run before the big change in a few months. I look forward to Windows 10.

Stay with windows 7 for as long as possible

Well besides being free, it sounds bla & those are 10 GREAT NEW features, hey OMG I am gonna have a heart attack, a snap windows assistant.

Hmmm, I found this here

Wil.l Windows 10 be free? There is a persistent rumor that Windows 10 will a free upgrade for Windows 8 and 8.1 users. Most recently, the head of Microsoft in Indonesia reportedly confirmed this with a website called Detik. There is also a rumor that Microsoft will offer some kind of carrot to get Windows XP users to upgrade from their 13-year-old operating system. In both cases, I think it’s wishful thinking that Windows 10 will be free — Microsoft derives a lot of its money from Windows licensing — but it might be heavily discounted in some special cases. At the Windows 10 unveil event, there was no mention of pricing at all.

i will need to buy windows 10 as i have no valid 7 or 8.1 key to upgrade to windows 10 but i am using the preview as my main os and have no problems with it so far.

can play my usual games and installed classic shell to get the windows 7 start menu back

I am trialing Windows 10 on an old PC, not got much running so far as I just wanted a general idea, Minecraft is not working for me. So far undecided, Windows 10 is ok but a few things bug me, which will probably be ironed out or improved before release.

I think some will prefer 10 over 7, as it seems more Account orientated, linked to cloud storage etc in a more natural manner for phone/tab users.

I would say wait, or if you have another PC or spare hard drive, try it.

I'm thinking of upgrading a really old laptop to Win 7 (from Vista), so I can get the Win 10 free upgrade. If I like it I'll upgrade my main rig from 7 to 10.

But to answer the initial question, there is no way I'd go from 7 to 8.1 at the moment. There's a potentially much better (initially free) upgrade around the corner.

My only issue is that if I don't like Win 10, how easy will it be to revert back to Win 7?

My only issue re. the upgrade is should I wait for 10.1

Benn using 8/8.1 since launch and it's a great OS but this is a no-brainer... wait and be upgraded for free.

Wait to try out a free fully tested public consumer build?, i'm not convinced but if i can bypass some silly requirement to sign into a microsoft account, (although i'm not sure if there is a stupid microsoft account to sign into an operating system?), and if it's fairly straight forward to remove all the xbox style clutter it might be beneficial for me?.

you don't need a Hotmail account to use windows 8.1 or 10, you can create a local account, I'm using windows 10 9926 as my main PC at the moment and I have no issues with it so far.

use it for gaming and internet
