ok im like most of us on here i upgrade quite often whether it be a graphics card or memory or hdd....tend to keep motherboards longer....so my question is what version of windows 7 do i need to buy that allows me to install over and over again when need be if i replace parts that are different from the initial install thanks.

You want to buy a retail copy of whichever version of windows you want. Retail isn't tied to the hardware but OEM is tied to hardware.

Under the licensing terms retail is transferable, OEM is not. Note that's transferable between machines, not installed concurrently.

i see so i can install on anything i have fopr myself even if i change the whole pc in the future .

Yes, the retail license can be transferred.
So when you build yourself a new machine you are simply transferring the license from your old machine to the new.
Remember however that the license allows for the OS to be installed on any one machine at any time - so just because its retail doesn't mean it can be installed on as many machines as you like at the same time.

I have installed an OEM copy of vista on different motherboards, you just have to ring them up to activate rather than do it online.

Yes - but it is against the license agreement to do so.
You are currently running an unlicensed OS and are no more legal than somebody who downloaded their OS from the net.

Most people assume that when people are asking about buying OS's they are attempting to be license legal - something they won't be if they move an OEM license.

I know of a local shop who does this on a regular basis.

The heathens.

Edit: Is there a reward from microsoft available if you grass them up ? :D

Not sure about the reward.
I do know that MS would be interested if its a company doing it - much more worth while taking it to court.

I always grass up websites offering illegal downloads of purchase of pirate software.
I've received no end of rewards from software companies for alerting them.

In fact I've now got to the stage of deciding what software I want.
Find a site offering it illegally.
Tell the manuifacturer how you were about to buy the software, used a search engine and found an illegal download.
So far about 50% of companies have then offered me the software for free as reward :)
