Windows 7 Virus Removal?

My Windows 7 system started acting strange recently, I don't understand why.

When I boot up, I can't connect to a network and my Anti-Virus (Avast Home) is disabled and when I try to re-enable it just ignore the request no matter how many times I click it.

The wireless network icon in the systray just keep trying to connect and when I click the icon nothing happens, if I right click and try to go to Network Center it loads up the Center but just a plain blank Window.

I suspect its a virus, I dual boot Ubuntu also, I was hoping I could fix this without formatting my Machine, any advice?

Download a virus boot cd and start the computer from it to perform a scan and see what it reports?

Try something like Avira Rescue.
